This was our radiothon (pledge) week, so there was no featured
album. The program was a mix of requests and personal favourites,
with a few new arrivals. No posting for last week (18 October) - I
was in Sydney listening to English duo Show of Hands. A first for
me in that we received a 4 track CD as the ticket to their concert,
complete with cover specifying the venue and date. Oh, and the
concert was free - but we didn't find that out until we arrived.
The promoters are very eager to use the current tour as an
introduction to Show of Hands ( http://www.showofhands.co.uk ) so
they'll get lots of work when they return next year. Good music,
good stage performance.

Australia re-elected a conservative Government last Saturday, so the
program on Sunday followed a big wake the night before. Our Prime
Minister is very bland, uninspiring and not even worthy of being the
subject of scurrilous songs. The folk movement here needs
politicians to lampoon, not ones we just prefer to ignore.

recorded at 2MCE-FM during the week. 'Radio Booligal' is a one hour
radio style presentation of the music, songs and poetry of Joe
Cashmere (1872 - 1959) who was one of Australia's great traditional
musicians. Harvest Moon assume the characters of Joe's band members
and perform a 1930s/40s radio show complete with advertisements,
listeners' request segment and comedy cut-ups. Facts about
Australian history and the life and unique fiddling style of Joe

The forces of reaction are gathering as the Australian federal election
approaches. The Tasmanian state election has just delivered a very close
result - probably resulting in a period of instability down there - and the
Greens were pretty much wiped out in the process. It makes you think just
that little bit more when you plan a program.

Heady times in Australia, what with the $A now buying a small handful of
sand, and our financial markets blaming everyone but ourselves for our
problems. This morning the Prime Minister called a Federal election for 3
October, so in the next few weeks I'll be playing a selection of
'appropriate' songs to encourage voters to think carefully about where we
want this country to be going. Every little bit helps.
