Henry Lawson would deserve to be Australia's national
poet, except that no such position exists and also the
fact that he died in 1922! Yesterday was Henry's 137th
birthday, a good reason to play some of his poetry
recited and put to music.
The featured album was CORVUS by COLCANNON

The featured album was IN SPITE OF OURSELVES
by JOHN PRINE (Oh Boy Records). An
album of "meetin', cheatin' & retreatin'
songs" on which Prine duets with female, mostly
country, singers. Some very fine songs delivered in
an engaging style. For example, putting the voices
of John Prine and Iris DeMent together seems strangely
compelling! The following tracks were scattered through
the program:

Today's program included an extended interview by 2MCE's
Seth Jordan with English folk diva Maddy Prior, who
starts an Australian tour next month, and three tracks
from her new album, 'Ravenchild'.
The program also featured several songs and poems on the
theme of Reconciliation. More than 150,000 people
walked across the Sydney Harbour Bridge this morning in
support of furthering the process of reconciliation
between Australia's white and indigenous communities. One
significant issue is the Prime Minister's refusal to say
the word "sorry" in connection with 'the stolen
generations'.
This term describes the thousands of Aboriginal and
Islander children removed from their families by
Government and Church in order to help them 'assimilate'
into Australian society. This practice was still
taking place in the 1960s.
The indigenous population (and many others) want the
Australian Prime Minister to acknowledge past Australian
Governments' complicity in this process by using the word
"sorry". He hasn't said "sorry"
and he didn't walk across the bridge today, although many
politicians did.

I have finally set up a site for archived
playlists. Although the program has been going
since 1976 I only started preparing playlists (mostly for
folkdj posting) in mid 1998. And then it took
another two years to take it the next step. By the
next millenium the program might be live on line!

was HIGHLIGHTS 2000 - A SAMPLER OF THE 2000

The featured album was SONGS OF THE SNOWY
MOUNTAINS by THE SETTLERS (BMG).
Construction of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme
began in 1949, at a time when post-war migration brought
a huge population increase to Australia. 100,000
people from over 30 countries worked on the Snowy Scheme
and the songs on the album, all written by Ulick O'Boyle,
tell the stories of some of its characters and
events. This is a 1999 CD re-release of a much
earlier vinyl original.

This week I took a few tracks from the Pete Seeger
tribute CD released on Appleseed a year or two back,
"Where Have All The Flowers Gone". Last
Friday I saw a production of "One Word ... We",
an excellent musical biography of Pete Seeger put
together by a Sydney music teacher, Maurie Mulheron, so I
was feeling very mellow about the great octogenarian.

Tabor, Eileen McGann and Les Barker. The following

English singer Roy Bailey was awarded an MBE in the
Queen's New Year's Honours List. Giving an imperial
honour to an outspoken socialist folk singer certainly
justified my playing a few of his songs on the
