The Australian Broadcasting Corporation is Australia's
national broadcaster (radio and TV), funded by
taxpayers' dollars, and right now it is under
unreasonable pressure by a predatory conservative
Australian Government to cut expenditure. Believe
me, folks, this is a bad thing.
The featured album was MUSIC FROM ABC COAST

together by the good people at one of the Australian
national broadcasting network's many regional radio

covered by the ABC Coast FM signal. The CD is not

This delightful new release is described as "A
snapshot of songs collected from traditional,
unaccompanied singer Carrie Milliner. The
remarkable variety of the songs, Carrie's singing style,
and her accompanying stories provide a fascinating
glimpse of the Australian aural tradition at
work". Chloe Roweth's sweet and evocative
vocal presentation gives this collection of traditional,
music hall and early 20th century popular songs a new
lift.

To celebrate National Folk Week in Australia all this
program's music was taken from AUSTRALIAN FOLK 2000, a
newly released compilation double CD from FOLK ALLIANCE
AUSTRALIA ( www.folkalliance.org.au
). It features 37 contemporary folk tracks, written and
performed by a wide range of (mostly) young musicians
from around Australia. A wonderful sample of the
outstanding array of talent to be found performing at
Australian festivals and folk clubs. 140 minutes of
music for $25 - what a bargain!
All the tracks have appeared on earlier, generally
self-published, recordings by the artists. Web
sites or email addresses are given where known.
The program also included an interview with Rob Willis -
respected folklorist, collector and musician.
* All tracks are Australian content

details about each track on the album and adding
information about the times and the characters
depicted. A very worthwhile project, well produced
and entertaining. Published by Winter Quarters
