This program was full of surprises! I only arrived
home from the North American Folk Alliance Convention the
previous day (via some gigs in Washington and California)
and was literally peeling the plastic wrap off some of
these CDs in the studio. That's not very
professional, I know, but I plead the jetlag defence.
The program featured mostly material acquired at the
Convention, along with some items promoting the upcoming
Illawarra Folk Festival and two tracks to mark the
passing of Sir Donald Bradman, aged 91, the finest
cricketer to ever play the game.

MACHLIS (Culburnie). This outstanding new

example of a great interpretive fiddler getting back to
his musical roots. This promises to be a wonderful
series of recordings if Volume 1 is any indication. The

Preparing this week's program I realised I was including
so many Australian recordings that I made it an all
Aussie two hours. Quite appropriate, really, since
January 26th was Australia Day. The featured album
was A THOUSAND MILES OR MORE by RUTH
HAZLETON AND KATE BURKE. This is the second album from
these two young singers and multi-instrumentalists who
perform mostly English traditional material, but include
other songs and tunes - old-timey, Galician, Australian
and even a Dylan standard. Very competently
performed, recorded and self-produced album. Find
Ruth at ruthsta@yahoo.com
