2 July 2006

The featured album was A TRIP TO THE LAKES by THE BOAT BAND (Harbourtown).  Northern English dance music from a band I had previously only associated with Cajun music.  The tunes could be all traditional but the sleevenotes lack those details, containing instead a lengthy essay on the Cumberland fiddler, William Irwin, with whom many of the tunes were associated.  Strong playing, intriguing modal structures and innovative percussion make this album stand out.  The following tracks were scattered through the program:

CARLISLE REEL;  KESWICK BONNIE LASSES;  DEAR TOBACCO;  WESTMORLAND WALTZ

Part of the program was a tribute to Igor Medio and Carlos Redondo, two members of the Asturian band Felpeyu www.felpeyu.com , who lost their lives in a motor vehicle accident last weekend while on their way to a gig.  They made many friends during their three Australia tours and will be greatly missed.
